A woman has been fined in court for illegally whitening teeth at a Lancaster beauty salon.
Hayley Wilding, who did not attend Lancaster Magistrates Court on December 20, was found guilty in her absence of unlawfully practising dentistry at Vanity Salon in Ullswater Road.
The prosecution came from the General Dental Council (GDC), which is the regulatory body for the dental profession in the UK.
The illegal practice is contrary, to Section 38 (1) and (2) of the Dentists Act 1984.
She was also found guilty of unlawfully carrying on the business of dentistry, contrary to sections 41 (1) and (1B) of the Dentists Act 1984.
Ms Wilding was fined £900 in relation to the first charge, and £450 in relation to the second charge and ordered to pay a £135 victim surcharge and full costs to the GDC of £1862.64.
Only dentists, dental hygienists and dental therapists can carry out tooth whitening.
This is the second successful prosecution launched by the GDC since a decision by the High Court in May that tooth whitening is the practice of dentistry and should only be undertaken by registered dental professionals.
The Dentists Act 1984 makes it a criminal offence for anyone other than a registered dental professional to carry out dentistry. A spokesperson for the GDC said it was committed to protecting the public by bringing cases of illegal practice to court.
